Candidates for the 2023 Board of Directors

Ed Steele:

  • I do hope to receive your vote for Club President for 2023, even though I am running unopposed. Your vote would affirm the direction that the Club is going. I hope that you agree with my vision for the Club’s future. Even more, if you don’t agree, let’s create an open dialogue to the benefit of the Club.
  • I would like for Rocktown Disc Golf Club to continue efforts to grow the sport to juniors and females in our community. I would love for us to facilitate a summer league for local youth. Programs such as Mixed Doubles, brought to you by Club Member Andrew Kipps, will continue to grow the Club.
  • I want to encourage Club members to volunteer to host events throughout the year as an outreach to the community. Events like Glow Rounds run by Club member Cori Pflugradt bring our brand to members of the community, sometimes for the first time. Former Board member and current Club member Dan Castle is hosting the “Green With Envy” tournament on December 10 to benefit Village to Village with a toy drive. (Sign Up!) And Trevor Oyer, current Club VP has his EMU Royals team on the course at least weekly for practice rounds. It is this type of outreach that touches the many parts of our community that will help the club to grow.
  • As our club grows in members, we also need to look at course expansion. There have been some discussions about course expansions recently. We will work with almost any entity that has interest in using available land for the purpose of course installation. What we need to keep in mind is that any course expansion will require the mobilization of the club membership. We will need to establish fund raising goals and determine how we will go about achieving those goals. And that’s before we scratch any dirt. But, if we don’t have a starting point, we will never get to the finish.
  • 2023 will mark our Club’s 20 th Anniversary Ice Bowl. I will work with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to again establish an online donation platform. I will encourage all Club members to participate either by playing or donating.
  • One goal I have is the easiest to accomplish. I will send out an agenda one week prior to each Board meeting. This is especially important to the Open Board meetings, so that the membership knows what is on the agenda and can plan accordingly.

Vice President:

Andrew Kipps:

  • I picked up disc golf about four years ago after winning a disc at a bar trivia night and have been an avid player ever since. I have been a part of the club for two years, mostly playing Mondays and Wednesdays. I have been on Rocktown ODCC team the last two years and was honored to be co-captain of the team this year. In 2022 I was on the Rocktown Disc Golf Club Outreach committee and as part of that started a monthly mixed doubles night.
  • I am also an avid baseball fan and have served on the board of the New Market Rebels of the VBL for the past 9 years, where I am currently the Secretary and Internship Coordinator. Professionally I work for Rockingham County Parks and Recs running programs and trips.

My goals for the club:

  • Continue mixed doubles as a way to welcome female players into club activities.
  • Establish a regularly scheduled money doubles round.
  • Pursue options for future courses in Harrisonburg and surrounding areas.
  • Increase opportunities for player development/improvement. I want to provide resources for players in our club to get better.
  • Asses ways to make the club more welcoming to new members and increase overall membership and participation.

Ben Tyson:

  • In the last couple of years, I’ve been increasing my involvement in the club: enjoying Saturday and Monday league rounds, Wednesday Wacky rounds and doubles, helping prep the course for events, helping rebuild tee pads and baskets, and joining the task force to help increase kid’s and women’s involvement and looking at signage at Westover. I’ve also helped develop and maintain the course at Highland Retreat and organized disc golf tournaments there.
  • I’d like to join the Rocktown Disc Golf board in order to continue to grow the sport – both for members of the club (as well as prospective members) and for other users of the disc golf courses that Rocktown maintains. I’d work to increase competitiveness for club members, create opportunities to travel as a club outside the traditional 3 local courses, and create opportunities for kids, women, and other players to interact with the club and develop stronger disc golf skills.

Curtis Bradley:

Jen Steele:

  •  I will continue to refine the automation of the Club’s financial records to provide accurate and timely reports.
